PAPERSHELL PECANS
Planting more than one variety will help ensure adequate fruit set and nut production.
PROTOGYNOUS: Release pollen after their stigma have become receptive.
PROTANDROUS: Shed pollen before their pistillate flowers are receptive.
CHOCTAW: A cross between Success and Mahan. High in oil content, about 60% kernel, thin hull, large.
Well adapted to most pecan growing areas. Protogynous.
MOHAWK: Vigorous grower; nuts are large and full. Matures early and has thin shell. Protogynous.
SHAWNEE: Cross between Schley and Barton. Vigorous growing trees. Thin shelled, medium
size nuts of excellent quality. Protogynous.
TEJAS: 50 - 75 nuts per pound; 50-56% kernel. Precocious and prolific. Excellent shelling nut. Holds
green foliage late into season. Protogynous.
SHOSHONI: Odom-Evers cross. Early producer of large nuts; 40-50 per pound. Disease resistant. Protogynous.
KIOWA: Mahan-Odom cross. Nuts are large and oblong, 45-50 per pound. Bears early with heavy crops
of excellent quality nuts. Protogynous.
WICHITA: Mahan-Halbert cross. Medium size nuts and heavy, dark green foliage. Heavy bearer
at an early age. Recommended for Western areas. Protogynous.
SIOUX: This variety is the result of a cross between the Schley and Carmichael varieties.
The shells are thin and the kernels smooth and bright with high oil content and excellent flavor.
Protogynous.
CHEYENNE: Medium size nuts; 55-60 per pound, 57-61% kernel. Bears heavy and early. Does
well in most regions. Protandrous.
PAWNEE: Mohawk-Starking-Hardy cross. Large nut. Early nut maturity and high kernel percentage.
Scab resistant. Protandrous.
MELROSE: Medium size pecans, originated in Louisiana. 45-50 nuts per pound, scab resistant.
Protogynous.
MARAMEC: Originated in Oklahoma. Large, thin shelled nut. 59% kernel. High productivity,
midseason maturity. Protogynous.
STUART: Comes nearer being suited to all sections of the country and all soild, than any
other variety. Large nut, fills out well and a heavy bearer; also a fast growing variety. Protogynous.
SCHLEY: Strictly a first-class pecan variety. Nuts are medium-large; oblong and very thin shell.
Protandrous.
SUCCESS: A heavy bearer. Large, oblong nut with thin shell. One of the best Eastern varieties.
Protandrous.
MAHAN: One of the larges pecans grown. Nuts average about 2 1/2 inches long. The best
variety for a shade tree. Protogynous.
DESIRABLE: One of the larger pecans, excellent cracker, bears early and is a very heavy producer.
Has a thinner shell than Success. Disease resistant. Protandrous.
CAPE FEAR: Bears heavy crops at an early age. Scab resistant. 55-60 nuts per pound. Best for
Southeast states. Protandrous.
SUMNER: Early bearing, large, good quality nuts. Suited for close space planting. Protogynous.
CANDY: Medium sized nuts, early ripening, concistent and heavy bearer. Protogynous.
BURKETT: A good one for the West. Fills out well, has good flavor, medium to large round nuts.
Very prolific. Protogynous.
WESTERN SCHLEY: Similar to Eastern Schley, but thrives better in the drier climate and higher altitudes
of the West. Protandrous.
ELLIOTT: Small, polific nut of excellent quality. Scab resistant in all areas of Pecan belt. Ptotogynous.
OCONEE: Large nut. 56% kernel. Adequate disease resistance. Protandrous.
PODSEDNICK: New variety. Large nuts at 22 per pound. Disease resistant. Protandrous.
CADDO: Regular producer with good yields, Scab resistant. Protandrous.
HICAN: Pecan and Hickory cross hybrid. $3.00 extra over Pecan prices, ask for availability.
